I kind of perceive it like: The old world order that was established after WWII, it isn't anymore what the kings of the capital want and need anymore in order to pursue their goals. It was a special time after WWII that liberalism and capitalism could forge a symbiotic alliance anyway - but with communism and real socialism gone, there is no need for it to exist anymore. In other words: One can drop the cover now and show oneself openly as the slavedriver that one is. Where can people run to if they disagree? You can control all the structures necessary to escape... With no place to run to, you can be as cruel as possible - you can literally afford it. It doesn't harm your cause.
