All of the things that you mention first - I have my doubts if the US ever had this before. Because it's a frequent habit for US culture to absorb words of European thinkers and totally misinterpret them because US culture and people forget (or aren't ware) that these words refer to a culture different than theirs - and that what the US is like isn't a standard for the rest of the world. Isn't the way the world works like throughout the rest of the planet outside of the US.
