As a someone who has broken away from Catholicism, this appears logical.

And, pragmatically speaking, this is something that was supposed to happen sooner or later. At an age of 95 years, you're not going to live another 20 years.
Though, it's also a bit that he's still made it that far, that he still lasted that long after his resignment. It could have as well happened 1 or 2 years after that.

It's something different than as stubborn Pope John Paul II died who still remained in office as he was visibly sick for long.
