Last Week's Movie Quote...

Horace: Ninety percent of the people in the world are fools and the rest of us are in danger of contamination.

This quote comes from the 1969 movie musical, "Hello Dolly".
It's the movie that so many people love to hate because it stars Barbra Streisand and not Carol Channing.
It also stars Walter Matthau, and the future Phantom Michael Crawford...

This week's song comes from the 2011 movie, "Take This Waltz".
Yeah, I don't know it either. lol...
And to be perfectly honest, the song is total fluff and I abosolutely love it...

The Sea, The Sea

Every day- in the dawn- flocks of starlings fly through our air space, heading inland. Then in the evening they follow the same flight path back towards the sea. My guess is they spend the night roosting on- or rather under- the pier; all those struts and girders like a man-made forest.

We were talking about the sea at the lunch party on Saturday and I dug a quote from Swinburne from the memory banks. Yesterday I looked it up and found I'd misquoted.

Swinburne wrote:

"I will go back to the great sweet mother,
Mother and lover of men, the sea"

And I had rememered it as

"I will go back to the great grey mother,
Mother of gods and men, the sea."

Actually I think my version is an improvement. The sea isn't "sweet", "grey" is much better- more evocative, and I think "mother of gods and men" has the edge over the original.....

Over 500 Million Years Ago, Early Vertebrates Had Four Eyes That Could See 360 Degrees

Every mammal, every fish, every vertebrate (creatures that have a spine) has two eyes. It’s been that way for millions and millions of years. But maybe it wasn’t like that forever.

During the Cambrian, when evolution was experimenting all sorts of strategies, early vertebrates may have had four eyes, and they were high-res eyes, too.

Maple Syrup: 40 Tried & True Recipes
Paperback – Lay Flat, February 11, 2020
by Corrine Kozlak (Author), Kevin Scott Ramos (Photographer)

Today we finished reading our first cookbook of the year. \o/ We bought this just a couple weeks ago at the small farm show. Our friends at Golden Ridge Farms had their maple root beer and also these cookbooks. I had just seen a different book that was mostly history and only a few recipes, so when I spotted this one, I pounced on it. The front matter includes a table of contents, Preface, Tree to Table, Maple Syrup History, How Maple Syrup Is Made, Maple Syrup Grading, Sugar Shack Fun, Do-It-Yourself Maple Syruping or Backyard Sugaring, and Cooking and Baking with Maple Syrup. The recipe chapters are Breads and Breakfast, Entrees, Sides, Sweets and Desserts, Appetizers and Beverages. The index in the back does include both ingredients and titles, but is not greatly detailed.

Middle age is becoming a breaking point in the U.S.

For many Americans, midlife is no longer a plateau—it’s a pressure point.

Middle age is becoming a tougher chapter for many Americans, especially those born in the 1960s and early 1970s. Compared with earlier generations, they report more loneliness and depression, along with weaker physical strength and declining memory. These troubling trends stand out internationally, as similar declines are largely absent in other wealthy nations, particularly in Nordic Europe, where midlife well-being has improved
.

The article actually said most of what I would've said regarding causes and solutions. One thing it missed: the sandwich effect. Middle-age adults, mostly but not exclusively women, often become responsible for aging parents as well as children. It's actually worse for the few male caregivers: almost all of the rare support programs serve only female caregivers.  Even if they're permitted in, being the only man in a group of women can feel more isolating than just staying home.

Today is partly cloudy and cold.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a large flock of sparrows, two starlings, a male cardinal, and a wren.  The sparrows are widely foraging on the ground under bushes.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 2/1/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I refilled the hopper feeder.

EDIT 2/1/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I put out more birdseed.

EDIT 2/1/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I am done for the night.

Name: Jon (JD) Watson

Age: let's just say I was a BBS SysOp before the internet existed.

I mostly post about: day to say stuff. I tend to lean geeky/tecchy and Canadiana, but I think a lot about lots of things and post topics can get pretty random. I keep it clean, mostly, so you can safely check out my content to decide for yourself :)

My hobbies are: journalling (privately, not necessarily online, but there is definitely overlap), writing, nerding out on home tech projects, self-improvement, and caring for my three dogs. If anyone ever asks you how many dogs is too many dogs, the answer is three.

I'm looking to meet people who: are Canadian OR have geeky job/hobbies OR see normal things in deeper ways OR are sane Linux users (AKA, not the alpha-nerd type of boor) AND are tolerant of the incredibly diverse state the world is in AND kind to things and people that can do nothing for them.

My posting schedule tends to be: Dailyish. Usually more than weekly but I doubt I can consistently hit daily.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: right-wing crap in all its forms, both overt and covert. And, honestly, politics in general. I firmly believe that social media is the worst place to get news or reliably accurate information on anything, and politics has emerged as the most divisive topic to date. Thus, I am not interested in getting involved in political discussions as a general rule.

Before adding me, you should know: I overthink everything and will probably eventually bore you with some deep indepth post about the merits of square toothpicks versus round ones.

Is it people have lost interest in my journal? Too much politics?
Does Russia not like my politics?

Valentines Bingo Card 2-1-26

Here is my card for the Valentines Bingo over in [community profile] allbingo. The fest runs from February 1-28. (See all my 2026 bingo cards.)

If you'd like to sponsor a particular square, especially if you have an idea for what character, series, or situation it would fit -- talk to me and we'll work something out. I've had a few requests for this and the results have been awesome so far. This is a good opportunity for those of you with favorites that don't always mesh well with the themes of my monthly projects. I may still post some of the fills for free, because I'm using this to attract new readers; but if it brings in money, that means I can do more of it. That's part of why I'm crossing some of the bingo prompts with other projects, such as the Poetry Fishbowl.

Underlined prompts have been filled.

There were five of us- and two dogs- sitting round after a big lunch, and Jacky suggested me should all tell our life stories. It was like the set up for an Edwardian novel or short story collection- Conrad or Buchan- except that this wasn't happening in "The Club" but in our front room and we weren't "old Africa hands" but four gals and me- who, on these occasions, figure as an honorary gal. So, five mini-autobiographies. The dogs weren't called upon though Molly, who is a Roumanian rescue dog, would have had a tale to tell.

It took my mind off the war I'm expecting to break out any time now in the Middle-East between (initially) Iran, Israel and the USA.

And stopped me thinking about those photos of Prince Andrew (I refuse to pretend he's not a member of the Royal Family) down on all fours beside a young woman who is lying prone on the parquet floor of some horrible mansion- and the Epsteiny stuff about the Pres and Bill Gates-...

Or about the two dead in Minneapolis.....

By the way, have you heard Springsteen's protest song, Streets of Minneapolis? It's like a return to the glory days- the old lion awake and roaring.....

Sunday Word: Demesne

demesne [dih-meyn, -meen]

noun:
1 possession of land as one's own
2 an estate or part of an estate occupied and controlled by, and worked for the exclusive use of, the owner
3 land belonging to and adjoining a manor house; estate
4 the dominion or territory of a sovereign or state; domain
5 a district; region

Examples:

A couple of centuries or so later, the peninsula became part of a Spanish land grant, and the demesne of Manuel Dominguez as his Rancho San Pedro. (Patt Morrison, Palos Verdes Peninsula landslides can tell us a lot about L A history, Los Angeles Times, May 2024)

In Loki, the titular character finds himself in the bizarre (almost Brazil style) demesne of the Time Keepers, an organization devoted to ensuring the sanctity of the timeline. (Erik Kain, Owen Wilson And Tom Hiddleston Light Up First 'Loki' Disney Plus Trailer, Forbes, April 2021)

The castle or manor-house of the baron or lord, into which the thegn’s hall had now developed, was the centre of rural life. Around it lay the home-farm, the lord’s demesne land, cultivated partly by free tenants, partly by the customary labour due from the villeins whose cottages clustered on its border, and whose holdings, with a tract of common pasture and common woodland, made up the remainder of the estate. (Kate Norgate, England Under the Angevin Kings)

However, as he pursued his wayfaring with the two Armenian Christians who formed his retinue, he began to hear from the inhabitants of that portion of Abchaz the rumor of an equally dread demesne, named Antchar, lying before him on the road to Georgia. (Clark Ashton Smith, 'The Kingdom of the Worm')

After winding along it for more than a mile, they reached their own house. A small green court was the whole of its demesne in front; and a neat wicket gate admitted them into it. (Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility)

Origin:
c. 1300, demeine, demeyne (modern spelling by late 15c), 'power; dominion; control, possession,' senses now obsolete, from Anglo-French demesne, demeine, Old French demaine 'land held for a lord's own use,' from Latin dominicus 'belonging to a master,' from dominus 'lord, master,' from domus 'house' (from PIE root dem- 'house, household'). Re-spelled by Anglo-French legal scribes under influence of Old French mesnie 'household' (and the concept of a demesne as 'land attached to a mansion') and their fondness for inserting -s- before -n-. Meaning 'a manor house and near or adjacent land,' kept and occupied by the lord and his family, is from late 14c, hence 'any landed estate' (late 14c) (Online Etymology Dictionary)

Why isn't 'demesne' pronounced the way it's spelled? Our word actually began as demayn or demeyn in the 14th century, when it was borrowed from Anglo-French property law. At that time, the Anglo-French form was demeine. Later, the Anglo-French spelling changed to demesne, perhaps by association with another term from Anglo-French property law: mesne, meaning 'intermediate.' (Mesne has entered English as a legal term as well.) According to rules of French pronunciation, the 's' was silent and the vowel was long. English speakers eventually followed suit, adopting the 'demesne' spelling. Our word domain (which overlaps with the meaning of 'demesne' in some applications) also comes from Anglo-French demeine. (Merriam-Webster)
