Die Tomatenpreise schießen diesen Winter wirklich durch die Decke. Bei den großen sehr, bei den kleinen nicht ganz so immens, aber auch spürbar.
Es ist jetzt schon die dritte Woche (wenn nicht sogar mehr), in der man, außerhalb von Angeboten, nicht unter 2,50 € das Kilo fündig wird - selbst bei den billigsten Discountern. Wenn es in Richtung 2,50 geht, dann stehen die Aktien gut! Es geht noch böser, im Bereich von 3-4 Euro pro Kilo.
Von einer miserablen Ernte in Nordafrika oder Spanien war nichts zu hören, also gehe man erst mal nicht davon aus, dass es daran liegt.
Aber, es sind jede Menge Leute gen Europa aufgebrochen, die alles haben stehen und liegen lassen.
Ist es Verschwörungstheorie oder Fake News, wenn man sich dazwischen einen Zusammenhang denkt?

Did they import tomatoes from Syria? Spain I think is in the worse shape out of all EU. And unemployment is really high there.

Spain is a source (have already seen the first strawberries this year, attributed as coming from there!), but in winter Morocco is very strongly present, for example. Tunesia might be too, but I don't remember it so strongly. Same Senegal or so. (Those attributed to "Netherlands", who knows where they come from... China?)

Syria is only big in the talk about refugees, but even the trouble that now appeared with selected people that came in between the big refugee flow last year (those who committed assaults here or are connected to assaults that took place) shows it's not only Syrians that came here, you also must have a good part of people which came from Northern Africa and wider than that. Mainly those counteries where you can find the places that grow sun-hungry crops for the rest of the world, especially Europe.
Let's say, it's justified logic to think that North Africa might have troubles in finding people to do harvesting when people rather tend to run away to Europe, looking for the really big catch (that they're destined to never get)...

Oh, yeah, I was about to ask about Egypt and Libya. Well, then it makes sense.

Libya I don't know about any kind of products they export these days that are worth the mentioning, Egypt is rather known for potatoes, but I didn't notice anything exceptional on that still.
Someone told me about cucumbers being a little expensive now in the winter episode. But for that, I also hadn't noticed anything exceptional in the prices. Up to a Euro per each is normal in Winter here. 1,50 would get me worried, or higher.
Told me like "winter's been a little too hard in Greece, harvest isn't that well", but, as I said, nothing exceptional came across my way still. Maybe I also didn't pay attention.
Cauliflower is also pretty expensive at the moment, up to 2 Euros for one. But I also don't have the impression like that's too exceptional. Where it usually comes from, you'd ask me too much, I wouldn't know where.
