The threat of defeat on all fronts and possible loss of personal privileges lead to the decision that the dilettantish acting leader must be liquidated.

Usually it is hard for people to get rid of this "personal privilege" habit. But notice it is rather a bad habit like drinking or drugs. People rarely get happy from being personally comfortable. Compare to all the studies when people feel the happiest when they do something for others.

In that case it sure was nothing more than greed.
That people which helped WWII going loose, they only speculated about increasing their existing riches in the first place. One shouldn't think any different than that.
And when it became an option, this event may result not in their favor, they got fearful about even losing their assets which they already had before and, in the end, standing there with empty hands.
For people like nobles, which were always used to be not poor and to be "something better than all other people", this is like the ultimte disgrace, the ultimate form of public shame.
